Description
Centered on the female external nose in anterior view, the dorsum nasi descends in the midline to the apex nasi, with the paired alae nasi flaring laterally to frame the nares. Inferiorly, the columella forms the soft tissue pillar between the nostrils and blends superiorly with the nasal tip complex. Lateral nasal sidewalls contour toward the alar-facial grooves, where the nose meets the adjacent cheek and upper lip region. Surface landmarks, not hidden structures, drive the anatomy here. Anterior gross morphology matters because it maps directly to common clinical problems and procedural planning, from assessment of nasal valve compromise to rhinoplasty tip support and alar base position. Small differences in alar width, columellar show, and tip definition guide choices such as alar base reduction, spreader graft placement for internal valve collapse, and repair strategies for nasal fractures that create visible dorsal deviation. This is also the view patients and clinicians use for baseline documentation and postoperative comparison. Form tells function. Use this illustration for head and neck anatomy teaching in gross anatomy and otolaryngology blocks, for facial plastic surgery and dermatology publications discussing nasal surface subunits, and for patient education materials that explain external nasal landmarks during rhinoplasty or trauma follow-up. It also suits clinical charting templates where consistent anterior photography is paired with labeled anatomy for objective assessment. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
