Description

Lateral profile of the human ovary (ovarium) is rendered with the surface (germinal) epithelium and tunica albuginea enclosing a cortex packed with follicles at different stages and a more centrally placed medulla of loose stroma and vascular channels. Primordial follicles cluster in the superficial cortex, while larger primary and secondary follicles sit deeper, their granulosa layers and forming antrum displacing surrounding stromal connective tissue. Toward the deep aspect, the hilum region transitions to the mesovarium attachment, where ovarian vessels and nerves enter before branching through the medulla. Spatial organization is the teaching point. Follicle topography matters when you talk about ovarian reserve and iatrogenic injury. Cortical-sparing techniques in ovarian tissue cryopreservation aim to preserve the primordial follicle pool, and this view helps clarify why wedge resection or overzealous cautery can deplete reserve. It also maps cleanly onto common ultrasound language, where antral follicle count and dominant follicle development reflect the same cortical compartment shown here. Use this artwork in reproductive anatomy and embryology curricula, REI lectures on folliculogenesis, and pathology or gynecologic surgery materials that need a clear distinction between cortex, medulla, and follicular stages without the distraction of adjacent pelvic organs. It also supports figure panels for journal articles on PCOS, diminished ovarian reserve, and fertility preservation, where readers need a consistent gross-to-micro bridge.
