Description

Centered in the lesser pelvis, the female urinary bladder is presented with emphasis on the main body (corpus vesicae) between the superior dome and the inferior neck as it funnels toward the urethra. Anteriorly the vesical body lies immediately posterior to the pubic symphysis, separated by the retropubic space, while posteriorly it relates to the anterior vaginal wall and, more superiorly, the cervix and uterus when present in the field. Laterally, the detrusor surface approaches the pelvic sidewall and the course of the distal ureters as they enter the bladder wall obliquely to reach the trigone. Mucosal rugae typically dominate the corpus when the bladder is not distended, contrasting with the smoother trigonal region inferiorly. Focusing on the bladder body matters because many common disorders and procedures involve this segment rather than the neck or trigone. Overdistension and postpartum urinary retention preferentially stretch the detrusor of the corpus, and repeated high-pressure storage can drive trabeculation and diverticulum formation along the bladder wall. Cystotomy and suprapubic catheter placement target the anterior-superior bladder wall of the body, so understanding its relationship to the pubis and peritoneal reflection helps reduce bowel injury and guides safe access.
