Description

Anterior in the female pelvis, the urinary bladder corpus occupies the space between the pubic symphysis and the uterus and anterior vaginal wall, with the peritoneal reflection forming the vesicouterine pouch across its superior surface. The dome (apex) points anterosuperiorly toward the anterior abdominal wall, while the base (fundus) faces posteroinferiorly toward the cervix and upper vagina. Along the inferolateral margins, the bladder wall continues toward the bladder neck, where the urethra exits inferiorly, and the expected entry points of the ureters lie posterolaterally at the trigone, even when the focus remains on the corpus. Focusing on the corpus matters because its relationships shift with filling and with uterine size, changing what you encounter during pelvic exam, cystoscopy orientation, or a retropubic approach. Stress urinary incontinence procedures and midurethral sling placement run close to the bladder neck and anterior bladder wall; a clear mental map of the corpus helps explain how cystotomy can occur and where to look when you suspect intravesical injury. Postoperative urinary retention, vesicovaginal fistula after hysterectomy, and endometriosis involving the bladder dome also anchor to this anatomy. Short and unforgiving. Use this artwork in pelvic anatomy teaching for medical or PA curricula, urogynaecology and urology lectures, or figure plates discussing cystocele, bladder injury, and vesicouterine peritoneal reflections in gynecologic surgery texts. It also suits patient-facing education where accurate female-specific bladder positioning is needed without overloading the page with adjacent organs. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
