Description

Anteriorly in the adult female pelvis, the urinary bladder is presented with emphasis on the corpus vesicae, the main body between the apex and the base (fundus). Superiorly, the dome of the bladder rises toward the peritoneal reflection, while inferiorly the corpus narrows toward the collum vesicae and internal urethral orifice. Posteriorly, the base faces the anterior vaginal wall and cervix, with the trigone situated on the posteroinferior internal surface and bounded by the ureteric orifices and urethral opening. Lateral surfaces contour toward the pelvic sidewalls where the vesical venous plexus and endopelvic fascia typically invest the organ. Focusing on the bladder body matters because its mobility and distensibility drive both symptoms and operative risk in women. The corpus expands superiorly as it fills, altering its relationship to the uterus and anterior vaginal wall, a key teaching point when correlating pelvic exam findings with urinary urgency, overactive bladder, or postoperative voiding dysfunction. During anterior colporrhaphy or hysterectomy, understanding how the bladder base transitions into the corpus helps you anticipate where cystotomy occurs and why a well-developed vesicovaginal space dissection reduces that risk. A simple contour, but clinically unforgiving. Use this artwork for gross anatomy and pelvic anatomy teaching blocks, urogynecology and urology lectures on female lower urinary tract anatomy, and surgical texts illustrating bladder exposure and adjacent organ relationships in the female pelvis. It also supports patient-facing education on bladder filling and pelvic organ prolapse when paired with simplified overlays. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
