Description
A fetus of approximately 20 weeks gestation lies within the uterine cavity, shown in lateral profile against the softly lit uterine wall. The rounded calvaria, sloping forehead, small nose and fused closed eyelids are clearly modelled, and the well-formed auricle of the external ear sits low on the side of the head, its helix and lobule already defined. One upper limb is flexed so the hand, with separated fingers, rests beside the cheek near the ear, while the opposite lower limb brings a foot with distinct toes into the foreground. The umbilical cord, its intertwined vein and arteries visible as spiralling pink and violet channels, passes diagonally across the field between the fetal trunk and the uterine wall. Twenty weeks marks the midpoint of gestation and the usual timing of the detailed second-trimester anomaly scan, when biometry such as biparietal diameter, head and abdominal circumference and femur length are recorded and the fetal face, hands, feet and cord insertion are systematically surveyed. The relationship shown here between cord, limbs and neck is the anatomy sonographers assess when documenting cord position, and the flexed posture with hands near the face reflects the maturing motor repertoire and emerging startle and grasp patterns. Eyelids remain fused at this stage, opening later in the second trimester.
