Description
The fetus lies in a flexed attitude within the amniotic cavity, head inclined toward the chest, spine convex posteriorly and limbs drawn across the trunk. The relatively large head shows a fine covering of scalp hair, a well-formed auricle with developing helix and antihelix, and closed eyelids typical of the mid third trimester approach. One hand rests near the face with separated fingers, while the flexed lower limb brings the foot and distinct toes toward the upper body. The umbilical cord emerges from the anterior abdominal wall and spirals toward the placenta, its two umbilical arteries and single umbilical vein visible as helically twisted vessels beneath the amniotic covering; the discoid placenta is attached to the uterine wall with its chorionic plate vasculature radiating from the cord insertion. By 25 weeks the fetus is beyond the accepted threshold of viability, and this stage is central to counselling on preterm birth, surfactant maturation, and neonatal intensive care planning. The rendered relationships support discussion of placental implantation site, cord insertion and coiling, and normal single-vein, two-artery cord anatomy, all routinely assessed at second and third trimester obstetric ultrasound. Fetal lie and degree of flexion at this gestation are still variable, which is relevant to fundal height assessment, amniotic fluid volume evaluation and the interpretation of biometry such as biparietal diameter and femur length.
