Description
The fetus lies curled within the amniotic cavity of the uterus, head to the lower right and back turned toward the viewer, with the limbs flexed tightly against the trunk in the characteristic fetal attitude. Fine detail is visible in the fetal hand and fingers held near the face, the foot and separated toes drawn up toward the abdomen, the folded external ear, and the sparse scalp hair typical of the early third trimester. The umbilical cord leaves the anterior abdominal wall and spirals across the amniotic space, its two umbilical arteries and single umbilical vein shown as coiled purple and red channels, inserting into the disc-shaped placenta at the upper left where chorionic vessels branch across the fetal surface. The surrounding myometrium and decidua form the reddish uterine wall enclosing the cavity.
