Description
The fetus lies in a flexed attitude within the amniotic cavity, head to the upper left with the external ear clearly modelled, the chin tucked toward the chest and the spine curved in the characteristic C-shape of the third trimester. The upper limbs are folded in front of the trunk with hands near the face, while the lower limbs are drawn up so that both feet and toes come forward toward the abdomen. The umbilical cord leaves the abdominal wall at the umbilicus and coils upward across the field, its paired umbilical arteries and single umbilical vein visible through the translucent cord surface as it runs toward placental tissue at the upper margin. Surrounding the fetus, the thin amniotic sac membrane is seen against the vascularised inner uterine wall, with amniotic fluid filling the space between. By 28 weeks the fetus has entered the period of rapid subcutaneous fat deposition, surfactant production and neurological maturation, so this stage marks a widely used threshold in discussions of viability and neonatal intensive care planning.
