Description
The fetus lies curled within the amniotic cavity in a cephalic-leaning attitude, the large rounded cranium filling the lower field while the trunk flexes and the limbs are drawn toward the chest. The flexed arm and hand sit near the face, the knees are folded so the sole of one foot rises toward the abdomen, and the well-formed external ear with its developing helix and antihelix is clearly modelled against the scalp. The umbilical cord leaves the anterior abdominal wall and spirals upward, its two umbilical arteries and single umbilical vein visible as coiled vessels beneath the translucent Wharton's jelly, inserting into the placental disc that lies against the smooth, vascularised uterine wall.
