Description
A realistic in-utero rendering places a fetus of about 30 weeks' gestation in a tightly flexed posture against the reddish uterine wall. The head fills the lower field, with fine scalp hair, closed and still fused-looking eyelids, a formed nasal tip and a well-modelled external ear whose helix and antihelix are clearly cartilaginous. The lower limbs are drawn up so that the plantar surface of one foot with its five separated toes and rounded heel lies beside the face, while a hand with distinct fingers rests near the chin and shoulder. The umbilical cord crosses the upper field, its coiled umbilical arteries and vein visible as a spiralled pattern within the cord surface. By week 30 the fetus has accumulated subcutaneous fat, so the limbs appear filled out rather than translucent, and skin colour reflects developing pigmentation. This period matters clinically because lung maturation, weight gain and neurological patterning of sleep–wake cycles and coordinated limb movement are all underway, and preterm delivery from this point carries a markedly different prognosis than earlier in the second trimester.
