Description

A fetus of approximately 31 weeks gestation is shown in the flexed intrauterine attitude, head presenting toward the lower part of the frame with the trunk and lower limbs folded above it against the reddish uterine wall. The scalp carries fine hair, the auricle of the external ear is fully modelled with a defined helix and lobule, and subcutaneous fat has begun to smooth the contours of the shoulder, arm and thigh. The hand lies close to the face while the foot with individually formed toes rests across the abdomen. The umbilical cord spirals from the umbilicus toward the upper field, its coiled surface indicating the two umbilical arteries and single umbilical vein twisting within Wharton's jelly. By the thirty-first week the fetus is in a period of rapid weight gain and brown fat deposition, with lung development advancing through the saccular and early alveolar stages, so this anatomy underpins counselling about late preterm and moderately preterm birth. The image supports discussion of fetal lie and presentation, cord coiling and nuchal cord risk, and the routine third-trimester ultrasound assessment of growth, amniotic fluid volume and umbilical artery Doppler indices. Ear cartilage recoil, plantar creases and skin maturity seen here are the same features used in postnatal gestational age scoring. Suited to obstetric and midwifery teaching collections, prenatal development atlases, antenatal class handouts and clinic displays explaining what the baby looks like in the third trimester. It also serves neonatology training material on prematurity, publisher figures tracing week-by-week gestational milestones, and patient-facing web and app content produced by hospitals and health agencies. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
