Description
A fetus of approximately 34 weeks gestation lies in a flexed, head-down attitude within the amniotic cavity, with the spine curved and the knees drawn toward the chest so the feet come to rest near the face. The head shows a full covering of scalp hair, a well-formed external ear with defined helix and lobule, and closed eyelids; the hands display separated fingers with formed nails, and the toes are equally distinct. The umbilical cord loops in front of the trunk and limbs, its coiled vessels visible as a paired umbilical artery and vein spiralling within Wharton's jelly toward the abdominal insertion. Behind the fetus the discoid placenta is attached to the uterine wall, its chorionic plate crossed by branching fetal surface vessels that converge on the cord root.
