Description
At 39 weeks of gestation the fetus fills the uterine cavity, shown here curled in the classic flexed attitude with the head low, chin tucked toward the chest, arms drawn across the trunk and the hips and knees strongly flexed so the feet rest near the abdomen. Surface detail is fully mature: scalp hair, a formed external ear with defined helix and lobule, plump subcutaneous fat over the limbs and trunk, and clearly separated fingers and toes with nails. The umbilical cord, its two coiled umbilical arteries and single umbilical vein visible through the translucent Wharton's jelly, loops over the thighs and inserts at the mid-abdomen, tracking back to the maternal surface of the discoid placenta. The thin amniotic membrane sheathes the fetus against the vascularised uterine wall.
