A fetus of roughly 31 weeks' gestation lies curled in the amniotic cavity, head directed inferiorly and the vertebral column arched to follow the contour of the uterine wall. The limbs are flexed in the characteristic fetal attitude, with the knees drawn toward the trunk and one foot brought close to the hands so that the individual toes and fingers are clearly resolved.
