Description
The fetus is shown in a flexed intrauterine posture at approximately 26 weeks of gestation, with the large rounded head presenting toward the lower field, the spine curved and the limbs drawn in against the trunk. One hand rests near the face while the knees and feet are folded up toward the abdomen, illustrating the limited space of the amniotic cavity in the late second trimester. The umbilical cord emerges from the anterior abdominal wall and spirals toward the placenta, its two umbilical arteries and single umbilical vein distinguished by colour along the helical twist. Behind the fetus, the discoid placenta is seen from its fetal surface, with chorionic vessels branching beneath the amnion and inserting into the cord root, all set against the vascularised uterine wall.
