Description

A fetus of approximately 32 weeks' gestation lies curled in the amniotic cavity, seen from behind and above so that the occiput, hair-covered scalp and the helix of the external ear dominate the foreground. The trunk is flexed with the thighs drawn toward the abdomen, the hands held near the chest with individual fingers distinguishable, and the feet crossed with separated toes, the classic attitude of flexion of late gestation. The umbilical cord leaves the anterior abdominal wall and spirals across the field, its two umbilical arteries and single umbilical vein visible through the translucent Wharton's jelly, running to the fetal surface of the disc-shaped placenta. Chorionic plate vessels branch across the placental surface, and the smooth, richly vascularised uterine wall forms the surrounding chamber.
