Description

A fetus of approximately 33 weeks' gestation lies curled within the amniotic cavity, seen from behind and slightly above so that the flexed spine, rounded occiput and external ear dominate the frame. The lower limbs are drawn tightly against the trunk with the plantar surfaces and individual toes clearly formed, the arms tucked between the thighs and torso in the characteristic flexed attitude of the third trimester. Scalp hair is well established, subcutaneous fat has smoothed the contours of the limbs and thorax, and the skin has lost the translucency of mid-gestation. The umbilical cord emerges from the abdomen and spirals away in a helical course, its single vein and paired arteries distinguishable, running toward the discoid placenta whose fetal surface and vascular branching pattern are visible against the vascularised uterine wall.
