Description
A fetus at approximately 29 weeks of gestation lies in a flexed, head-down attitude within the amniotic sac, shown in left lateral profile. The rounded cranial vault carries fine scalp hair, the external ear is fully modelled with a defined helix and lobule, and the eyelids remain closed over the developing eyes. Both hands rest against the cheek and jaw with distinct fingers and nail beds, while the lower limbs are drawn up in tight hip and knee flexion so the feet approach the trunk. Subcutaneous fat has begun to smooth the contours of the limbs and thorax. The translucent amniotic membrane and surrounding fluid enclose the fetus, with the umbilical cord passing toward the vascularised placenta seen against the deep red uterine wall. Week 29 sits at the start of the third trimester, a period dominated by rapid weight gain, brain growth with early cortical gyration, and continued surfactant production in the fetal lung. Clinically, this is the window in which growth is monitored by serial ultrasound biometry and amniotic fluid assessment, and in which fetal presentation, cord position and placental site are documented.
