Description
At 36 weeks of gestation the fetus is shown in the classic flexed attitude inside the uterine cavity, filling most of the available space. The head dominates the foreground, with dark scalp hair, closed eyelids and fused lashes, a well-formed auricle with defined helix and antihelix, a rounded nasal tip and full lips. One hand rests against the cheek and mouth with individually separated fingers and formed nail beds, while the opposite lower limb is drawn up so that the knee, thigh and plantar surface of the foot with its five toes lie close to the face. The umbilical cord passes across the flexed limbs, and the reddish, softly lit uterine wall forms the surrounding background. Subcutaneous fat has smoothed the contours of the shoulder, trunk and cheeks, and lanugo is largely replaced by a more opaque, less translucent skin. Thirty-six weeks marks the late preterm to early term transition, a period of intense clinical interest because surfactant production, thermoregulation and coordinated suck-swallow-breathe patterns are still maturing.
