Description
A fetus at approximately 22 weeks of gestation lies curled in the uterine cavity, seen in profile with the head filling the left of the frame and the flexed limbs gathered anteriorly. The cranial vault is large relative to the face, still smooth and hairless, with the fontanelles and sutures unossified beneath thin translucent skin. Facial detail includes fused, closed eyelids, a formed nose with patent nares, softly defined lips and a well-modelled external ear (auricle) set low on the side of the head. One hand rests near the mouth with individually separated fingers, while the opposite arm, thigh, lower leg and foot with distinct toes are folded into the characteristic fetal position. The umbilical cord passes across the upper field, its spiralled umbilical vessels visible through the covering of Wharton's jelly, against the soft red glow of the surrounding uterine wall.
