Description
A fetus of approximately 30 weeks' gestation lies in a flexed attitude within the amniotic sac, seen from the left lateral aspect. The head is large relative to the trunk, with fine scalp hair, a formed external ear with defined helix and antihelix, closed eyelids and a rounded facial profile. The upper limbs are drawn toward the chest with the hands close to the face and the fingers separated, while the hips and knees are flexed and the feet drawn up in the classic third-trimester posture. The umbilical cord passes from the abdominal insertion in loose helical coils toward the placenta, its transparent Wharton's jelly revealing the paired umbilical arteries and the single, larger umbilical vein. Behind the fetus the discoid placenta is applied to the uterine wall, and the thin, translucent amniotic membrane encloses the surrounding amniotic fluid. By week 30 subcutaneous fat has begun to smooth the skin contours, the fetus shows organised sleep-wake cycles and regular breathing movements, and lung maturation is advancing though surfactant production remains incomplete.
