Description
The rendering shows a third-trimester fetus at about 31 weeks of gestation lying in a flexed attitude within the uterine cavity, seen obliquely from the front and side. The head dominates the lower field, its occiput and parietal region covered by fine pigmented scalp hair, with the auricle of the external ear well formed and the helix and lobule clearly modelled. The trunk is curled so that the knees and thighs approach the chest, the arms fold across the upper body, and the hands and feet show separated fingers and toes with visible nail beds. The umbilical cord emerges from the umbilicus at the centre of the abdomen and spirals away in a helical course, its coiled umbilical arteries and single umbilical vein rendered in contrasting tones beneath the amniotic sheath, against the soft red uterine wall behind. By week 31 the fetus has accumulated subcutaneous fat that smooths the contours of the limbs and face, the skin has lost much of its earlier translucency, and lanugo and scalp hair are established. This stage is clinically important for late preterm and moderately preterm birth planning, where lung maturity, thermoregulation and weight gain govern neonatal outcome, and for obstetric assessment of fetal lie, presentation and growth by ultrasound biometry.
