Description
This close-up renders a fetus at approximately 20 weeks of gestation lying curled within the uterine cavity, seen in near-lateral profile. The rounded, hairless cranial vault dominates the frame, with the closed fused eyelids, low nasal bridge, short nose and softly formed lips clearly modelled; the auricle of the external ear is visible on the lateral surface of the head with its early helix and lobule. One flexed forearm and hand rise toward the face, individual fingers separated and nails forming, while the shoulder, upper torso and a flexed lower limb occupy the lower field. The umbilical cord passes obliquely across the forehead, its coiled umbilical vein and paired arteries visible through the translucent cord wall, and the warm red uterine wall closes the background.
