Description
A full-term fetus at 37 weeks of gestation is shown in tight physiological flexion inside the uterine cavity, framed closely so the head and limbs fill the picture. The scalp carries well-developed hair, the eyelids remain fused shut, and the nose and external ear (auricle) are fully modelled with a defined helix and antihelix. One hand lies across the face with individual fingers and formed fingernails visible, while the opposite lower limb is drawn up so that the flexed knee, thigh, foot and toes sit against the trunk. The umbilical cord loops between the limbs, and the softly lit uterine wall forms the surrounding boundary, conveying the limited space available to the fetus in late gestation. At 37 weeks the fetus is considered early term: subcutaneous fat has smoothed the body contours, lanugo is largely shed, and the flexed attitude with adducted limbs reflects normal fetal tone rather than restriction. This stage is central to obstetric discussions of fetal presentation, engagement and the assessment of fetal wellbeing through movement counting, cardiotocography and biophysical profile scoring, where limb flexion and tone are scored directly. The proximity of the cord to the limbs and neck is also the anatomy behind clinical concern for nuchal or body cord loops, and the visibly mature scalp hair, nails and ear cartilage are the same features used in postnatal gestational age scoring.
