Description

This in-utero rendering captures a fetus at approximately 22 weeks of gestation in a flexed attitude, filling the frame within the uterine cavity. The large, still relatively domed cranium dominates the left of the image, with the fetal face turned toward the viewer showing fused, closed eyelids, a short upturned nose, delicate lips and a well-formed auricle at the side of the head. The right hand rests close to the chin, individual fingers separated and fingernails forming, while the flexed forearm crosses in front of the trunk. Above and to the right, the thigh and a small foot with distinct toes lie against the body, and the umbilical cord with its coiled vessels passes across the upper field toward the placental surface. Diffuse red light through the surrounding uterine wall conveys the vascular, fluid-filled environment of the amniotic sac. At 22 weeks the fetus is in the middle of the second trimester, a stage marked by rapid growth in body length, deposition of vernix caseosa, and increasingly coordinated limb and hand-to-mouth movements that reflect maturing neuromuscular control. This is the period at which detailed anomaly and growth scans assess biometry, facial profile, ear position and limb integrity, and when maternal perception of fetal movement is typically well established. The stage also sits at the accepted threshold of viability discussed in obstetric and neonatal counselling, making accurate visualisation of fetal proportions and posture clinically valuable. The image suits obstetric and midwifery teaching on second-trimester development, antenatal clinic and patient-facing material explaining what an ultrasound scan is showing, and embryology or human development chapters in textbooks and atlases. It also serves prenatal education apps, pregnancy publications and editorial features requiring a realistic, respectful depiction of fetal life at a defined gestational week. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
