Description
The fetus is shown in a lateral profile, lying in the characteristic flexed attitude within the amniotic cavity, enclosed by the smooth inner surface of the uterine wall. The large domed cranium dominates the body proportions typical of the second trimester, with the external ear (auricle) fully modelled against the side of the head, closed eyelids and a rounded chin drawn towards the chest. Both upper limbs are folded across the trunk with the hands open and individual fingers separated, while the lower limbs are drawn up so that the knee, foot and toes rest close to the abdomen. The umbilical cord emerges from the abdominal wall between the limbs, its vessels faintly distinguishable, and translucent membranes and vascular markings of the uterine lining frame the fetus in soft focus. At approximately 24 weeks the fetus reaches the accepted threshold of viability, and this stage is central to counselling around extreme preterm birth, surfactant maturation and neonatal intensive care planning. The proportions depicted correspond to the anatomy assessed on second-trimester and early third-trimester ultrasound, where biparietal diameter, head circumference, femur length and abdominal circumference are measured to estimate growth.
