Description
A fetus of approximately 37 weeks gestation lies in the fetal position inside an intact amniotic sac, surrounded by amniotic fluid and enclosed by the vascular uterine wall with its endometrial lining. The head is large relative to the trunk yet body proportions have largely balanced out, the scalp is covered with dense pigmented hair, and the auricle of the ear is fully formed with firm cartilage. The upper limbs are flexed with the hands drawn toward the face, while the lower limbs are tightly crossed with well-defined toes and toenails, and a segment of umbilical cord is visible passing behind the thighs. Subcutaneous fat has filled out the limbs and trunk, giving the smooth, rounded contours characteristic of a near-term fetus. At 37 weeks the pregnancy has reached early term: pulmonary surfactant production is usually sufficient for independent breathing, swallowing and sucking reflexes are coordinated, and thermoregulation is supported by brown and white adipose tissue.
