Description
The fetus is shown at term, lying in a flexed attitude within the uterine cavity with the head presenting toward the lower uterus and the spine curved along the uterine wall. Subcutaneous fat has smoothed the body contours, the scalp is covered with dark hair, the auricle of the external ear is fully formed with firm cartilage, and the nails reach the tips of the fingers and toes. The umbilical cord spirals from the anterior abdominal wall to the placental disc seen at upper left, its two umbilical arteries and single umbilical vein rendered in contrasting colour beneath the amniotic covering. The placenta shows its maternal surface and branching chorionic vasculature against the vascularised endometrial lining. At 40 weeks the fetus has reached full maturity of the pulmonary, thermoregulatory and neurological systems, and this depiction illustrates the anatomy that governs labour and delivery: fetal lie, presentation, attitude and the relationship between cord, placenta and uterine wall.
