Description
The rendering shows a fetus lying on its side within the translucent amniotic sac, suspended in amniotic fluid and enclosed by the vascularised uterine wall. The head is large in proportion to the trunk, with a domed cranium, a closed developing eyelid, a formed external ear (auricle) and a rounded nasal profile. The upper limbs are flexed at the elbow with the hands drawn toward the chest and the fingers separated, while the lower limbs are flexed at hip and knee in the characteristic curled posture. The umbilical cord attaches at the anterior abdominal wall and spirals away into the amniotic cavity, its umbilical vein and paired umbilical arteries indicated by contrasting colour along the coiled length. This depiction of the fetus in situ underpins the counselling and imaging vocabulary used throughout antenatal care.
