Description
Viewed from an inferior orientation, the diaphragmatic (base) surface of the left lung is presented with color coding that clarifies the broad concavity molded to the diaphragm. The costal surface curves laterally and superiorly toward the acute inferior border, while the medial surface turns toward the mediastinum, where the impression of the heart and adjacent pericardium would lie anteromedially. Posteriorly, the base blends into the thicker parenchyma approaching the vertebral column and lower thoracic wall. A large contact area.
