Description
Medial anatomy of the left lung base is rendered in color, emphasizing the diaphragmatic surface and the adjacent mediastinal (medial) surface near the inferior pulmonary ligament. The left lower lobe occupies the inferior aspect, with the oblique fissure angling superoanterior to inferoposterior toward the posterior basal segments. Just medial and superior to the base, the pulmonary hilum region is implied where the left main bronchus lies posterior to the left pulmonary artery, and the inferior pulmonary vein courses anteroinferiorly toward the left atrium. Relations to mediastinal structures are framed by the cardiac impression anteromedially and a posterior groove for the descending thoracic aorta. This medial, basal perspective matters when you need to teach or plan around the left lower lobe’s proximity to the pericardium, esophagus, and descending aorta.
