Description
Medial surface anatomy of the left lung is rendered with emphasis on the cardiac impression (impressio cardiaca), the concavity molded by the heart along the anteromedial aspect of the upper and lower lobes. Superiorly and posteriorly, the hilum region and adjacent mediastinal pleura frame the impression, with the root of the lung positioned medial to the pulmonary parenchyma and anterior to the descending thoracic aorta. Anterior to the hilum, the indentation deepens toward the lingula, while inferiorly it approaches the diaphragmatic surface along the base. A left-sided contour. Teaching the left cardiac impression matters because it anchors the concept of mediastinal relations: the left ventricle and left atrium shape a deeper fossa than on the right, and that asymmetry helps learners orient an isolated lung specimen quickly.
