Description
Seen from an inferior perspective, the costal (parietal) surface of each lung forms a broad convexity that apposes the inner thoracic wall and ribs. The right and left lungs sit lateral to the mediastinum, with their inferior margins curving medially toward the diaphragmatic surface and the cardiophrenic region. Posteriorly, the contour sweeps toward the vertebral column; anteriorly it approaches the sternum and costal cartilages. Color segmentation helps distinguish the opposing pleural faces and the lung boundaries. An inferior viewpoint on the costal surface is a practical way to teach pleural topography and why basal disease behaves the way it does. Small pleural effusions layer dependently and blunt the costophrenic recess on upright chest radiographs, while pneumothorax collects anteromedially in a supine patient, changing where you look first on imaging. Needle decompression and chest tube placement also depend on this geometry, because the safe working corridor along the thoracic wall is defined by ribs, intercostal spaces, and the lung’s peripheral contour.
