Description
Arising from the aortic arch, the left subclavian artery courses superolaterally toward the thoracic inlet, passing posterior to the left sternoclavicular joint and deep to the clavicle (collarbone) as it approaches the first rib. Medial to it, the brachiocephalic trunk and left common carotid artery define the typical branching pattern, while the vessel’s proximal segment lies anterior to the vertebral column and pleura. Superiorly, the artery relates to the lower cervical region, and laterally it continues as the axillary artery beyond the lateral border of the first rib. Orientation is kept in true anatomical position for an internal anterior section. An anterior section of arteria subclavia sinistra helps clarify why this vessel is a frequent focus in endovascular and open vascular planning, since its origin from the arch and its angled takeoff influence catheter selection and wire trajectory. Proximal subclavian stenosis can produce subclavian steal physiology when flow reverses in the ipsilateral vertebral artery, and appreciating the proximal course supports accurate interpretation of CT angiography and arch aortography. It also frames the anatomic neighborhood relevant to iatrogenic injury during central venous access and pacemaker lead placement on the left.
