Description
Viewed from the left lateral side in an adult male, the descending colon tracks inferiorly along the left posterior abdominal wall, transitioning at the left iliac fossa into the sigmoid colon with its characteristic S shaped loop toward the midline pelvis. Posterior relationships implied by this perspective include the left kidney and quadratus lumborum superiorly, with the psoas major and iliacus forming a more inferior muscular bed as the bowel approaches the pelvic brim. Anteriorly, the colonic wall lies deep to the left abdominal wall layers, while the mesocolon and its peritoneal reflections define the degree of mobility, fixed for much of the descending segment and more mobile at the sigmoid.
