Description

Within the right lung, the lateral segmental bronchus (bronchus segmentalis lateralis) is shown branching from the segmental bronchus of the middle lobe and coursing laterally toward the costal surface. Proximally it lies inferior to the right superior lobar bronchus and anterior to the bronchus intermedius, then divides distally into smaller subsegmental bronchi that track with the lateral segmental pulmonary artery and veins. Orientation is referenced to the hilum medially and the pleura laterally, with the airway lumen presented as a bronchial tube rather than an alveolar field. Right-sided bronchial anatomy is the point. Segmental bronchi define bronchopulmonary segments, the surgical and radiologic units used for targeted resection and airway localization. Accurate identification of the right middle lobe lateral segment matters during bronchoscopy for mucus plugging or aspirated foreign body retrieval, and it guides thoracic surgeons planning a segmentectomy when disease is confined to a single segment. Radiologists also rely on this branching pattern to map atelectasis, post-obstructive pneumonia, or endobronchial tumor to a specific segment on CT and to correlate it with ventilation patterns. Pulmonary anatomy courses and respiratory blocks use this artwork to teach right lung segmental organization and the relationship of segmental bronchi to the hilum and pleural surface. It also fits thoracic surgery texts, bronchoscopy training materials, and radiology atlases that need a clean reference for right-sided segmental airway nomenclature and laterality. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
