Description
Posteriorly on the right lobe of the male liver, the bare area (area nuda hepatis, pars affixa) occupies the nonperitoneal surface directly apposed to the diaphragm. Superior and inferior to this patch, the anterior and posterior layers of the coronary ligament reflect from hepatic capsule onto the inferior surface of the diaphragm, defining the margins of peritoneal coverage. Medially, the region tapers toward the caval groove where the inferior vena cava lies in close relationship, while laterally it blends toward the right triangular ligament at the hepatic dome. No peritoneum intervenes. For teaching hepatic peritoneal reflections, this is the landmark that prevents the common oversimplification that the liver is uniformly intraperitoneal. The bare area explains how inflammatory or malignant processes can spread between the subphrenic space and the thorax through diaphragmatic lymphatics, and it helps orient surgeons during mobilization of the right lobe when dividing the coronary and triangular ligaments in open or laparoscopic hepatectomy. Radiologists also reference this contact surface when interpreting subphrenic collections that track along the hepatic dome rather than outlining a peritoneal recess. Useful in gross anatomy and abdominal surgery modules where students must map peritoneal ligaments and hepatic attachments in three dimensions, and in atlas plates or review articles discussing right subphrenic abscess, hepatic mobilization, or diaphragmatic involvement by liver-adjacent disease.
