Description
Curving around the lumen of the renal pelvis, the mucosa forms the innermost lining of the collecting system where urine exits the kidney. Transitional epithelium (urothelium) faces the pelvic cavity, underlain by a thin lamina propria that blends outward with the muscular wall and peripelvic connective tissue. In cross section the epithelial surface is oriented toward the center, while deeper layers lie peripheral, approaching the renal sinus fat and adjacent renal parenchyma at the pelvicalyceal margin. Urothelial folds create an irregular luminal contour. For teaching renal outflow anatomy, this slice clarifies the continuity of urothelium from minor and major calyces into the renal pelvis and onward to the ureter, a key point when tracking hematuria or urothelial carcinoma. That continuity explains why transitional cell carcinoma can present anywhere along the upper urinary tract and why urine cytology or ureteroscopic biopsy targets the mucosa rather than deeper renal tissue. Distension changes the apparent thickness and folding pattern, which helps correlate histologic appearance with filling states seen on CT urography or retrograde pyelography. A small surface, big implications.
