Description
Arising from the inferior lobar bronchus of the right lung, the lateral basal segmental bronchus (B9) is traced in posterior orientation as it courses inferolaterally into the diaphragmatic (basal) parenchyma of the lower lobe. From this back-facing perspective, its airway lumen sits deep to the posterior pleural surface, with more medial basal pathways (toward B10) expected to lie closer to the vertebral column and the inferior pulmonary ligament. Distally, B9 narrows and arborizes into subsegmental bronchi and bronchioles approaching the diaphragmatic surface, where basal atelectasis and dependent secretions often accumulate. Clear segmental geometry. Segment-level anatomy matters when you need to localize disease within the right lower lobe rather than describing a nonspecific basal process. Opacities that respect segmental boundaries on CT, recurrent post-obstructive pneumonias, and endobronchial lesions can be mapped to B9 to guide bronchoscopy and to plan a right lower-lobe segmentectomy, where preserving adjacent basal segments hinges on recognizing the expected course of the segmental bronchus relative to accompanying pulmonary arteries and veins. This posterior view also supports teaching how gravity-dependent regions of the lung influence aspiration patterns in supine and posteriorly recumbent patients.
