Description
Seen from the side with the trunk rendered semi-transparent, this depiction shows a term-approaching pregnancy at 36 weeks of gestation. The fetus lies in cephalic presentation within the amniotic cavity, head engaged toward the pelvic inlet, spine curved along the anterior uterine wall and the limbs flexed against the trunk. The umbilical cord loops anteriorly between the fetal abdomen and the uterine wall. Behind and above the uterus the maternal small intestine and colon are displaced superiorly and posteriorly, the rectum is compressed against the sacrum, and the urinary bladder sits low and flattened beneath the uterine cervix. The lumbar spine, sacrum and pelvic bone provide the posterior framework, while the stretched abdominal wall musculature and enlarged breast complete the maternal silhouette. This lateral cutaway explains the mechanical realities of late third-trimester pregnancy: reduced bladder capacity and urinary frequency, gastric and bowel displacement with reflux and constipation, accentuated lumbar lordosis with low back and pelvic girdle pain, and the diaphragmatic elevation that produces breathlessness.
