Description

This lateral cutaway of the maternal torso at 35 weeks of gestation opens the anterior abdominal wall to reveal the gravid uterus occupying most of the abdominopelvic cavity. The fetus lies in cephalic presentation, head engaged toward the pelvic inlet, with the spine curved along the anterior uterine wall, limbs flexed and one foot resting near the fundus. The umbilical cord loops from the fetal abdomen toward the placenta implanted on the uterine wall, and the thin amniotic sac outlines the fetal compartment. Maternal small and large intestine are displaced superiorly and posteriorly, the urinary bladder is compressed anteroinferiorly, and the lumbar vertebrae, sacrum, pelvic bone and lower rib cage are shown in translucent overlay behind the uterus, with the cervix visible at the lower uterine segment. At this stage of the late third trimester the fetus is nearing term size, and the spatial relationships shown here explain much of the clinical picture: fundal height near the xiphisternum, reduced bladder capacity with urinary frequency, gastric displacement and reflux, lumbar lordosis and low back pain, and reduced diaphragmatic excursion. The head-down lie is the presentation assessed at antenatal visits by Leopold manoeuvres and ultrasound, and the relation of the fetal head to the pelvic inlet is central to discussion of engagement, lightening and readiness for labour. Placental position relative to the cervix is equally relevant to counselling on delivery route. The rendering suits antenatal education, midwifery and nursing curricula, obstetric textbook and atlas figures, and patient-facing timeline material tracking pregnancy week by week. As part of a matched series running from the earliest embryonic weeks to late gestation in the same female subject and viewpoint, it allows educators, publishers and app developers to present consistent comparative growth and positional change.
