Description
Inferior lung anatomy is represented with color highlighting to separate bronchopulmonary segments at the base of each lung. On the right, the basal segments of the inferior lobe radiate around the basal bronchus, with medial and lateral basal territories distinguished from the anterior and posterior basal regions; the left base groups around the inferior lobar bronchus with anteromedial and posterolateral segmental patterns typical of left-sided fusion. Segmental bronchi and their accompanying bronchioles course distally, tapering as they approach the peripheral parenchyma and pleural surface. Color fields clarify boundaries where segmental planes run obliquely from the hilum toward the diaphragmatic surface. Segmental mapping at the pulmonary base matters when you need to think like a surgeon or interventional pulmonologist instead of a general anatomist. Basal segment bronchi are common targets during bronchoscopy for lavage, biopsy, and localization, and their relationship to gravity-dependent disease explains why aspiration pneumonia often concentrates in posterior basal segments, classically on the right in supine patients. When planning a segmentectomy for early peripheral lung cancer, these segmental limits define resection margins and guide identification of the correct segmental bronchus and vascular pedicle. Small mistake, wrong segment.
