Description
Vomer alae crown the superior border of the nasal septum, and this lateral view isolates the thin, wing-like expansions that flare posteriorly toward the sphenoid rostrum. The paired alae sit at the superoposterior margin of the vomer, framing the vomerine groove where the rostrum of the sphenoid is received, while the body of the vomer descends inferiorly toward the hard palate. Anterior to the alae, the vomer narrows toward its articulation with the perpendicular plate of the ethmoid, and posteriorly it contributes to the bony partition between the choanae. Small structure, big consequences. Septal deviation and vomerine spurs frequently involve the junctions along the vomer, and the superior alae matter when you are orienting the posterior septum near the sphenoid face during endoscopic sinus surgery.
