Description
Shown in an anteriorly oriented internal section of the male kidney, the renal artery enters at the renal hilum and courses posterior to the renal vein while lying superior to the ureter and renal pelvis as the three structures converge at the medial border. Segmental branches radiate into the renal sinus toward the renal columns, then continue as interlobar arteries between adjacent renal pyramids before arcing as arcuate arteries along the corticomedullary junction. Small cortical vessels (interlobular arteries and afferent arterioles) extend peripherally toward the renal cortex. Color coding distinguishes artery from vein. This cutaway clarifies the classic hilar arrangement (vein anterior, artery intermediate, pelvis and ureter posterior), a relationship that matters during nephrectomy, renal transplantation, and hilar clamping for partial nephrectomy. Accessory renal arteries, when present, often enter the kidney outside the hilum and can be missed without a clear mental model of how segmental branches distribute to end-artery territories. Infarction is segmental. Renal artery stenosis and fibromuscular dysplasia also localize to specific arterial segments, so understanding branch order improves interpretation of CTA, MRA, and catheter angiography.
