Description
Anterior craniofacial structures are sectioned to expose the paranasal sinus system surrounding the nasal cavity in an adult male skull. Superior to the orbits, the frontal sinuses occupy the frontal bone; inferior and lateral to the nasal cavity, the maxillary sinuses expand within the maxilla above the roots of the posterior teeth. Between the orbits, ethmoidal air cells form a honeycomb medial to the orbital walls, while the sphenoidal sinus sits posterior to the nasal cavity within the body of the sphenoid, just inferior to the sella turcica. Red mucosa-lined cavities and their communicating passages are emphasized against the bony framework and dentition. Spatial orientation in this section makes a teaching point that axial CT slices often obscure for beginners: the ostiomeatal complex is a crowded drainage corridor, and small changes in mucosal thickness can obstruct frontal, maxillary, and anterior ethmoid outflow. That matters in chronic rhinosinusitis and in functional endoscopic sinus surgery, where the uncinate process, ethmoidal infundibulum, and middle meatus relationships dictate the access route and the risk profile. Close proximity of the ethmoid labyrinth to the lamina papyracea and anterior cranial fossa is hard to ignore. Complications follow those boundaries.
