Description
Presented in a frontal section through the male skull, the paranasal sinus system is opened to the viewer with paired maxillary sinuses occupying the body of each maxilla, lateral to the nasal cavity and inferior to the orbital floors. Medially, the nasal septum divides the nasal airway, while the nasal conchae project from the lateral walls to form the superior, middle, and inferior meatuses in a stepped superior to inferior arrangement. Superior to the nasal cavity, the frontal sinus region and anterior ethmoidal air cells can be inferred along the medial orbital walls, with the bony margins of the maxilla, zygomatic processes, and adjacent cranial sutures framing the cut surfaces. Teeth roots sit directly inferior to the maxillary sinus floors. Close quarters. This sectional perspective matters because it clarifies drainage pathways and common sites of obstruction, where mucosal edema in the middle meatus can compromise the ostiomeatal complex and drive recurrent maxillary and anterior ethmoid sinusitis. The relationship between the maxillary sinus floor and posterior maxillary dentition also supports clinical teaching around odontogenic sinusitis and the risk of oroantral communication after extraction or implant placement. Endoscopic sinus surgery lives on these landmarks. Use it in head and neck gross anatomy labs to orient learners to the three-dimensional geometry of the nasal cavity, conchae, and paranasal sinuses, and in ENT or dental publications when illustrating sinus drainage, mucosal disease patterns, or preoperative planning for functional endoscopic sinus surgery and maxillary procedures.
