Running vertically in the anterior neck, the sternothyroid muscle arises from the posterior surface of the manubrium sterni and the first costal cartilage, then ascends deep to the sternohyoid as one of the infrahyoid strap muscles. Its fibers pass superiorly and slightly laterally to insert on the oblique line of the thyroid cartilage, placing it inferior to the hyoid but directly anterior to the laryngeal framework. Medially, the paired sternothyroids flank the midline and the trachea, while the sternocleidomastoid sits more superficial and lateral as it spans from sternum and clavicle to mastoid process. Bone landmarks often included in this field include the mandible, clavicles, upper ribs, and cervical vertebrae. Short and direct.
