Description
Running along the anterior neck, the sternohyoid muscle appears as a paired infrahyoid strap muscle extending superiorly toward the body of the hyoid bone and inferiorly toward the manubrium of the sternum and medial clavicle. Medial to it, the midline cervical fascia and the laryngeal skeleton sit deeper, while the sternocleidomastoid lies more laterally as a boundary of the anterior cervical region. Superiorly, the mandible, maxilla, and dentition provide craniofacial context, and posterior to the muscle line the cervical vertebrae stack with intervertebral discs. Bony landmarks anchor the relationships. Clear visualization of sternohyoid morphology matters when teaching depressor mechanics of the hyoid and larynx during swallowing and phonation, where coordinated infrahyoid activation counterbalances suprahyoid elevation. Surgeons and proceduralists also track this muscle as a superficial layer over the anterior visceral compartment: it is split or retracted in midline approaches for tracheostomy, thyroidectomy exposure, and drainage of deep neck infection, and it helps orient you to the laryngeal prominence and upper tracheal rings. Strap muscles can also be involved in postoperative dysphonia or dysphagia when scarring tethers normal laryngeal excursion. Small structure, common corridor.
