Description
Centered on the calvaria, the left and right parietal bones are presented with a linear fracture that tracks near the superior sagittal border, where each parietal meets its mate at the sagittal suture. Anteriorly, the crack propagates toward the coronal suture and frontal bone, while smaller splintering lines radiate laterally across the parietal squama toward the superior temporal line. Inferior landmarks of the facial skeleton remain visible in the same view, including the orbital margins, nasal aperture, maxilla, and mandibular dentition, providing orientation to the cranial vault above. Parietal fractures that approach the midline carry different risks than lateral vault injuries. A split along the sagittal suture sits directly over the superior sagittal sinus and adjacent meningeal grooves, so displaced fragments or suture diastasis can complicate venous outflow, worsen dural venous sinus bleeding, or coexist with subdural hemorrhage from torn bridging veins. For teaching, the midline location also reinforces how fracture lines tend to respect or traverse sutures, and why careful palpation and CT evaluation focus on the vertex even when the external impact seems anterior. Neurosurgery and emergency medicine teams can use this illustration in head trauma modules to correlate surface anatomy with the sagittal sinus and to discuss linear versus comminuted fracture patterns at the cranial vault. It also fits well in gross anatomy, radiologic anatomy, and forensic pathology materials when you need a clear, labeled reference for parietal bone injury near the superior sagittal border.
